Flying in or out of Charles de Gaulle (CDG)? Stop worrying about the traffic
As a luxury travel advisor, one of the most frequent logistical headaches I solve for clients is the "CDG Dilemma." You know the scenario: you have an early morning flight back to the US, or you’ve just landed off a red-eye and the thought of battling the notorious A1 autoroute traffic into central Paris feels exhausting.
Here is my favorite insider travel hack: Skip Paris for the first (or last) night and head to Chantilly.
Located just 20 minutes from the airport—and blissfully free of the traffic jams that clog the roads to the capital—Chantilly is a secret weapon for savvy travelers. It isn’t just a convenient pit stop; it is a world-class destination in its own right, home to a legendary château, the Great Stables, and now, one of my favorite new luxury hotels.
The Hotel: InterContinental Chantilly Château Mont Royal
Fresh off a stunning Summer 2024 renovation, the InterContinental Chantilly Château Mont Royal has quickly become my top recommendation for clients seeking a seamless arrival or departure experience.
The property is steeped in history. Commissioned by French composer Fernand Halphen in the early 20th century, the château commands a hilltop perch surrounded by an ancient oak and beech forest. It was once a noble hunting ground—in fact, if you visit during the autumn, you can still hear the stags bellowing during the rutting season.
The recent makeover has perfectly balanced this history with modern luxury. The facade still features friezes of hunting scenes, and the interiors conjure the world of music (look for the replica of the Opéra Comique stage where Halphen’s Le Cor Fleuri premiered), but the amenities are thoroughly contemporary.
The Details
- Location: 20 minutes from CDG Airport; 45 minutes from Paris (by train).
- Vibe: Historic grandeur meets forest serenity.
Perfect for: Pre-flight overnights, post-flight recovery
Advisor Insight: Which Room to Book
The story goes that Halphen built this château specifically to offer his wife a knockout view when she opened her curtains. The hotel honors that romantic legacy with 109 guest rooms and suites filled with natural light.
However, if you want the ultimate experience, ask me to book the Prince of Condé Suite (Room 310).
This suite features a wrap-around terrace with vistas that are simply sublime. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a morning coffee and watch the mist rise off the forest before you head to the airport.
The Jet Lag Cure: Biologique Recherche
After a long-haul flight, your body needs a reset. The hotel’s spa is a partnership with the cult French skincare brand Biologique Recherche—a favorite among my most discerning clients.
My recommendation? Check in, drop your bags, and head straight to the spa. A personalized facial or massage here, followed by a soak in the heated swimming pool or a session in the sauna overlooking the forest, is the best way I know to beat jet lag.
What to Do (If You Have Time)
While this is a perfect place to sleep, there is plenty to do if you have a half-day to spare.
- Ride into nature: The hotel offers electric bikes. Take one for a spin to the nearby Étangs de Commelles, a series of wildlife-rich ponds in the heart of the forest.
Visit the neighbors: The famous Château de Chantilly (often called the premier château in France after Versailles) is only about six miles away
Client Love: What They’re Saying
Here is why clients love booking this stopover:
"The perfect ending to our honeymoon."
"We were dreading the early wake-up call for our flight back to JFK. Taking your advice to stay in Chantilly the night before was a game-changer. We had a romantic dinner in the village, slept in (it’s so quiet!), and were at the check-in counter in 20 minutes. It felt like we gained an extra day of vacation." — Sarah & Mark T., New York
"That suite... wow."
"You weren't kidding about the Prince of Condé Suite. We sat on that terrace for two hours just watching the mist over the forest. It was the most peaceful moment of our entire month in Europe." — Jessica R., Los Angeles
"A logistical lifesaver."
"As a business traveler, I usually hate airport hotels. This didn't feel like one. I held my meetings in the library bar (Stradivarius) which was impressive, and the proximity to CDG meant I wasn't stressing about the traffic. I'll be doing this every time I fly through Paris now." — David C., Chicago
