By Jo Huffhines Luxury Travel Advisor
While my time spent in France and Italy gave me a deep appreciation for the Riviera and the Amalfi Coast, there is a secret along Spain’s Costa Blanca that I find myself whispering to my most discerning clients. It’s not the crowded sands of Benidorm or the bustling streets of Alicante.
It’s Xàbia (also known as Jávea)—a town that manages to be both delightfully understated and impeccably luxurious.
As your luxury travel advisor, I’m always hunting for destinations that offer that rare "trifecta": privacy, authentic culture, and world-class gastronomy. Xàbia delivers all three, wrapped in a landscape of dramatic limestone cliffs and turquoise waters that rival any in the Mediterranean.
Here is why the locals love it, and why I know you will too.
The "Secret" Beaches (Calas)
When my clients ask for "hidden gems," I send them to Xàbia’s calas—small, often pebbly coves carved into the coastline. Unlike the vast, umbrella-packed beaches elsewhere in Spain, these spots feel intimate and wild.
- Cala Granadella: Often voted one of Spain's most beautiful beaches, this horseshoe-shaped cove is surrounded by pine forests. The water is so clear it looks like liquid glass. Pro tip: I can arrange a private yacht charter to anchor here, allowing you to swim off the back of the boat and avoid the foot traffic entirely.
- Cala Portitxol (La Barraca): You’ve likely seen this on Pinterest without realizing it. Famous for its white fishermen's cottages with bright blue doors, it is the definition of Mediterranean charm. It’s perfect for a lazy afternoon snorkel followed by paella at the beachfront chiringuito.
A Michelin-Starred Culinary Map
For a town of its size, Xàbia punches incredibly high above its weight class in the culinary world. It is a playground for gourmands who want the stars without the stuffiness.
- BonAmb (2 Michelin Stars): This is the crown jewel of Xàbia. Chef Alberto Ferruz creates narratives on a plate, focusing on the history and biology of the region. The setting—a restored country estate with lush gardens—is ideal for a romantic evening.
- Tula (1 Michelin Star): For something more intimate, Tula offers what they call "sincere cuisine." It feels like dining in the chef’s living room, but with dishes that showcase the very best of the local lonja (fish market).
- The Dénia Connection: Just a 20-minute drive over the Montgó mountain (a stunning drive I highly recommend) lies Dénia, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and home to Quique Dacosta (3 Michelin Stars), consistently ranked among the world's best restaurants.
Where to Stay: Barefoot Luxury
Xàbia isn't about high-rise chains; it's about boutique luxury.
- Nomad Hotel: A chic, bohemian enclave right on the port. It’s adults-only and focuses on "Terra" (earth) and "Mar" (sea) in its design.
- Private Villas: For my families and wedding groups, I have access to a portfolio of private luxury villas perched on the cliffs of Cabo de la Nao, offering infinity pools with panoramic sea views that stretch all the way to Ibiza on a clear day.
Why Book With Me?
Spain is popular, which means the best tables and the best rooms in Xàbia are often booked months in advance. As a specialist in luxury European travel:
- I secure the reservations: Michelin tables are hard to get; I handle the waitlists and bookings for you.
- I know the logistics: The nearest airports are Alicante and Valencia. I arrange private transfers so your vacation starts the moment you land.
I curate the experience: From private boat charters to guided hikes up the Montgó massif, I ensure your itinerary matches your pace.
Ready to escape to the Costa Blanca? I am currently curating itineraries for Summer and Autumn 2026. Whether you are looking for a honeymoon spot that feels undiscovered or a culinary tour of Spain's east coast, let's connect.
