Rome Restored: Why 2026 is the "Golden Hour" for the Eternal City
by Jo Huffhines/Luxury Travel Advisor
If you followed the travel news last year, you know that 2025 was the year of the Jubilee in Rome. Millions of pilgrims descended on the Vatican to walk through the Holy Doors. Hotels were booked to capacity months in advance, the streets were a sea of humanity, and the energy—while electric—was, quite frankly, chaotic.
Many of my clients felt they had to skip Rome last year simply to avoid the crush.
But here is the secret that industry insiders have been whispering about for months, and why I am urging you to look at your calendar right now: 2026 is the year you actually want to be there.
We are currently entering a rare "sweet spot" in Roman history. The Holy Year has officially concluded. The massive crowds of pilgrims have returned home. And what they have left behind is a gift for the luxury traveler: a city that has been scrubbed, polished, and restored to its most brilliant shine, yet is suddenly breathing easy again.
The Billion-Euro Facelift is Complete
For the last two years leading up to the Jubilee, much of Rome was hidden behind white tarps and metal scaffolding. The city poured billions into preparing its face for the world. Now, that work is complete, and the reveal is breathtaking.
- The Monuments: The grime of city traffic has been power-washed away from the baroque churches and palazzos. The Travertine stone of the Colosseum and the marble of the Trevi Fountain are glowing white, free of the calcium buildup of decades.
- The Infrastructure: Pavements have been re-laid, piazzas cleared, and the city’s notoriously chaotic transit has been streamlined.
Visiting Rome in 2026 means seeing the city in "high definition," without the obstruction of construction work or the sheer density of the Jubilee crowds. You get the benefit of the renovation without the headache of the event itself.
The New "Emperors" of Hospitality
Perhaps the biggest change in Rome is the hotel scene. For decades, Rome relied on its "Grand Dames"—beautiful, historic, but sometimes a bit tired.
In preparation for 2025, the world’s most exclusive hotel brands raced to open properties in the Eternal City. We saw the debut of the Bulgari Hotel Roma, the ultra-sleek Rome EDITION, and the sanctuary-like Six Senses.
Last year, getting a reservation at these properties was nearly impossible; they were blocked out for dignitaries, Vatican delegations, and royalty. In 2026, this incredible new inventory is finally available to us. We can now secure those rooms with the terraces you dream of—the ones overlooking the Spanish Steps or the private courtyards where you can sip a Negroni in total peace.
The "Exhale" of the City
There is a palpable sense of relief in the city right now. Romans are reclaiming their piazzas. The frantic pace required to host 30 million visitors has slowed into that famous dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing).
For you, this translates to a return to intimacy.
- It means we can secure a prime table at Pierluigi or Roscioli without needing a favor from a senator.
- It means walking through the Galleria Borghese without feeling rushed by the group behind you.
- It means standing in the Pantheon and actually hearing the silence that the architecture was designed to create.
Access is the New Luxury
During the Jubilee, "VIP Access" was a relative term. When the entire world is in town, no one truly skips the line. But now, the exclusive experiences that I love arranging for you are back on the table.
We can once again arrange private, after-hours visits to the Vatican Museums, where you can be alone in the Sistine Chapel with just your guide and the keys. We can book the underground Scavi Tour without fighting a lottery system. The city has opened its doors again, not just to the masses, but to the individual.
My Advice: Don't Wait for 2027
Do not wait until next year. By 2027, the word will get out that Rome is pristine again, and the standard tourist crush will return. 2026 offers a unique window where the infrastructure is brand new, but the mass tourism wave has receded.
Whether you are looking to pair a few nights in Rome with a luxury cruise out of Civitavecchia, or you want to spend a week just getting lost in the artisan shops of the Monti district, let’s get it on the calendar.
Rome is ready for her close-up, and for the first time in a long time, she has room for you.
Don’t Just Read About It—Join Me in Rome This Spring!
I just shared why 2026 is the "Golden Year" to visit Rome. The scaffolding is down, the city is gleaming, and the crowds are manageable.
So why not see it for yourself in just a few months?
I still have access to exclusive space on our upcoming Cunard voyage sailing this May 2026, from Rome (Civitavecchia) to Trieste.
This is the perfect opportunity to take the advice from my latest blog post: fly in a few days early for a "Pre-Cruise Roman Holiday." You can enjoy the newly restored monuments and the quiet luxury of the city before we board the Queen Victoria to sail around the boot of Italy.
The Details:
- Date: May 2026 (Coming up fast!)
- Route: Rome (Civitavecchia) to Trieste
- The Experience: We start with the magic of the Eternal City and end near the romance of Venice.
Since we sail in less than 90 days, we are in the final booking window. If you want to grab one of the last suites and experience Rome at its absolute peak, reply to this email with "MAY 2026" immediately, and I will send you the details.
Let’s make this spring unforgettable.
